What is the best way to store whole roasted beans after opening the bag?

As the title says, what is the best way to store roasted beans after opening the bag?

Typically I just keep them in the bag and try to squeeze the air out and seal it up tight. Should I be doing something more?

If the coffee is pretty fresh, I’d say simply folding down/clipping the bag or utilizing the zip seal is perfectly fine as long as you’re drinking it within a couple of weeks.

If the coffee is a little further off roast or you don’t plan on drinking it right away, you can either utilize a vacuum canister like the fellow Atmos or just toss it in the freezer (not the fridge… your coffee could absorb some of the aromatics from the more pungent things in your fridge and no one wants onion flavored coffee)

You grind frozen beans? Or have to defrost them?

You can grind frozen! It usually grinds finer this way if I’m not mistaken. So have to account for that.

And what would you consider “pretty fresh”?

Within 2-3 weeks of roast.

Honestly if it’s less than 2 weeks off roast it’s probably still off gassing a bit and your better off with it just staying in the bag on your countertop/cabinet.

I try to buy coffee that is 1-2 weeks off roast, and then I pour the whole bag in my hopper and use it within a week. Just let it off-gas in the hopper.

I usually store them in the bag that they came in. I basically rip through a normal bag in 2ish weeks.

Never thought too hard about when they were roasted as long as it was a date that wasn’t too far in the past. Maybe looking into that would be good.
