Acquire rare, high-end green coffees via a blockchain presale that would be roasted and shipped directly to token holders.
Logistics
Coffee Selection
TecmoBo (+ anyone else with contacts at origin) would present the DAO with a selection of 3-5 rare variety/experimental process green coffees.
Descriptions would be provided including: cupping notes, origin (country, region, farm, lot), variety, process, altitude, green coffee cost ($/lb), retail value of roasted coffee ($/lb).
DAO would vote on which coffee to source.
Crowd Sourcing Options
a raise would be done through an NFT sale
Each NFT would be redeemable for an 8oz (225g) bag of roasted coffee and mint cost would reflect the production cost.
Once coffee arrives at the roastery, there would be about a week needed to profile and cup the coffee before it’s ready to ship.
Once it’s ready, we would make it available on a website where it could be claimed via a burn-to-redeem NFT function (0xCoffee website is built out for this, we could do it there or make a fork)
-OR-
We could do all the above, but use and ERC-20 token designed for the DAO and allow payments for the coffee only via that token.
Other Considerations
Shipping throughout North America wouldn’t be a problem, but international shipping would probably be most efficient if there was a regional shipping hub to send a large amount of coffee to, or coordinate with regional roasters to send a portion of the green coffee
Packaging and website design: I have a ton of stock, blank bags around (Black & white block bottom bags with zip seal and valve as well as some clear stand up pouches also with zip seal and valve) But maybe having some packaging/label designs submitted for DAO approval could be good. Same with the website. We can utilize the 0xCoffee website and add a groundsDAO product class or we could start a new website either forking the 0xCoffee WP build or work with ThirdWeb (or someone similar) to do a Shopify build.
+1 think the idea is great. I think it would be cool to have the option for people outside of the primary holders to buy the coffee in erc-20. I think the costs will vary wildly depending on the SCA rating / quality of greens and how much the roaster will charge for roasting.
I think it would be cool to have minimal packaging just lot info and a token hash or something. mvp style and try to get straight to the coffee
@Tecmo_Bo said in tg that we could get about 250 8oz bags out of a sack
Let’s say a sack of 89SCA is 900USD
7$ for shipping (would be more Internationally) x 250 bags is
1750
Plus maybe 1000$ for a roaster to dial Ina profile and do some tests and roast ? I have no idea how much this would cost, I can ask a friend roaster here in Switzerland.
Is already 3650 (about 14.60) per bag + packaging and labels.
Just fast napkin math. What do you think @Tecmo_Bo ?
These types of coffees would be more expensive. Probably in the range of $1200-$4000 for a 69kg bag. ($9-$25/lb green)
Once you get into this class of coffee, many are available in 20-25kg vac sealed boxes, so smaller buys would be an option (roughly 3 of these would equal one standard bag)
also have to remember that moisture loss creates a delta between green weight and brown weight. 1lb of green coffee nets ~0.85lb of roasted coffee (1kg nets ~850g). So the CoGS of 1lb of roasted coffee are about 18% higher than the green cost.
if I were to roast it, I wouldnt charge to dial in the profile, etc. Only a set $ per unit to roast, bag & fulfill to cover the gas burn and labor cost.
@Tecmo_Bo, thanks for spearheading the first forum proposal!
My two cents:
For everyone to be on the same page, how about giving us a bit more context on what rare and high-quality" beans mean? (not everyone is a coffee-sourcing expert like you)
Would the DAO be sourcing the coffee beans first and then opening the NFT sale? Or vice versa? Asking because if we do the NFT sale first, we could let the token holders choose the top 3-5 coffee varieties from a longer list of candidates > ownership of the NFT, giving you a chance to select which coffee we will be sourcing, toasting and delivering.
90(ish) cup score coffees, Cup of Excellence qualifying coffees, exotic varieties and experimental hybrids (gesha, Sudan rume, maragesha, pink bourbon, SL28, San roque, etc), experimental/exotic processes (anaerobic fermentation, ice/cold fermentation, double/triple fermented, fruit processed naturals, lactic processes, etc). I know those aren’t terribly helpful terms for the layman, but a google search on the terms would provide sufficient info to make an informative vote.
What I would not do however is any sort of flavored coffee or Kopi Luwak coffee. I also tend to stay away from certain origins for sourcing transparency ethical reasons.
I’d say DAO selects coffee, then use NFT to purchase the green and have it transported. That reduces risk.
0xCoffee.io (this is admittedly in a bit of a “beta” build at the moment, but the blockchain to Ecomm rails are built out and the whole thing functions well for the most part)
tecmobo you wanna give an estimate per unit so we have an idea of total cost minus greens ?
would the nft also cover shipping ? (I think it would be more elegant that way) What would be the best way to budget this ?
curious what other onchain dynamics we could build into it. Like does the nft convey voting power plus give access to purchase / claim in another token (usdc, eth, etc) how much would we want to build the treasury vs making the coffee more accessible/ less expensive?
do we want to go more nounish and try to build out the treasury and then have a seasonal coffee drop + other proposals? V curious what people are after / where they think this should go !
I think this idea is kind of a venture that the Noun-like DAO can take on. Although it might end up preceding the noun-like DAO, simply because we’re still waiting on art.
